Security BSides Athens 2018

Security BSides Athens 2018 was the 3rd Ethical Hacking conference that took place in Athens, Greece. Once again we created a conference for the information security community, by the information security community, with a special thanks to all our volunteers.

We love moving the venue to different locations each year to ensure the participants get to "rediscover" the event. One of the main reasons why we love scouting for a new location each year, is because we adapt the conference to the venue's attributes, whichever these are. This is what makes the event unique each year and a lovely memorable experience, while trying to bring more quality, rather that focus on quantity.

Security BSides Athens 2018 (www.bsidesath.gr) took place at Impact Hub Athens (link) which allowed us to bring a different look and feel to the whole event. (All the information for our previous events is archived and can be found here: https://www.bsidesath.gr/index.php#Pevents)

This year we managed to reach 170 attendees exceeding our planned capacity by 25%, we had 1 Track for talks, and 1 Track for workshops and an "underground" setup for the CTF.

Last year we introduced the "gamification" of the CTF, and we are very proud that we did that first as a security conference! Once again, this year we tried to have a realistic CTF scenario with the help of our CTF partner Hack The Box, while demonstrating the ethical side of hacking. More specifically:

CTF Scenario:
After a disruptive cyber-attack by a group of threat actors against a famous luxurious hotel & casino in Las Vegas, which is known as Vegas Paradise Hotel & Casino, the stakeholders decided to bring in a group of Ethical Hackers (Penetration Testers) to the scene. The goal is to manage to access the server and restore it to its original state of operation, by technically giving you permission to hack into it. Time is ticking for this type of establishment and they need to be operational as soon as possible.
For that reason, the stakeholders of the Vegas Paradise Hotel & Casino, have stated that the first three Ethical Hackers who will be able to achieve the goal and help the hotel get operational again, they will be rewarded accordingly!

As you all know, we want to keep the conference open for you to come and as you know it has been completely free of charge. However, due to the high demand, all of our free tickets were going really fast. So, once again this year we decided to include the "donation to charity" ticket category for all participants, which allowed us to control the free tickets registration, while collecting funds to be sent to one of the most well-known charities for children in Greece:
"The smile of the child" (www.hamogelo.gr

In other words, the minimum fee for the ticket is collected as a donation to the charity. This allowed us to gather 550 Euros this year, for "The smile of the child" and we are very proud that we managed to gather this amount.

We had an amazing line up of speakers from all over the world. Of course, goes without saying that we could not do this if it was not for our sponsors. Of course, goes without saying that we could not do this if it was not for our sponsors. A big Thank You goes out to our Sponsors, who supported the conference and the information security community.
